2024 Field crew positions

Wildfire, forest resilience and prescribed fire monitoring with the UC Davis Safford Lab

The lab of Dr. Hugh Safford at UC Davis is looking to hire crew members for a seasonal field crew to collect data on vegetation, forest fuels and prescribed fire monitoring. For this season we have planned 4 field teams linked to different projects.

Approximately 750-800 hours (4-5 months), starting around July 15th

The lab of Dr. Hugh Safford at UC Davis is looking to hire crew members for a seasonal field crew to collect data on vegetation, forest fuels, and prescribed fire effects in forest and shrubland ecosystems.

This work will support the project 'Scaling Science-Driven Vegetation Treatments for a Wildfire Resilient California,' a collaboration between UC San Diego, CAL FIRE, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, and USF.

The people hired will be part of a 3-person team that travels to forest and shrubland ecosystems across California to establish monitoring plots and collect pre- and post-prescribed fire data on vegetation and biomass/fuels in order to calibrate and validate data collected coincidentally with a TLS sensor. Ultimately the data will find their way into 3-D forest fuel models and develop a prescribed fire planning support tool using 3-D fire modeling.

Work may include laboratory tasks to determine the moisture content of collected fuels, and participation in and observation of prescribed fires, depending on weather, availability, and partner organization invitations. Wildland and/or prescribed fire experience is a plus.

Seasonal Forest Ecology and Botany Field Crew Lead and Members

Start date: Variable – mid-May to mid-June, 2024/ End date: Variable – mid-August to early-November, 2024

Crew lead(s) and up to six crew members are needed to collect ecological data related to forests, vegetation, and wildfires in support of research and monitoring on public lands. US Forest Service ecologists and UC Davis researchers from the lab of Dr. Hugh Safford will supervise but only occasionally accompany the field crew during field sampling. The data will be collected to support long-term monitoring, original scientific research, and evaluation of forest management activities and needs. Work is located in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains, primarily on national forest lands but with some possible work in national parks or other ownerships. Crews will generally work 10-hour days, on an 8-day on / 6-day off work rotation.

~ 1000 hours (5-6 months), starting April 15th

The lab of Dr. Hugh Safford at UC Davis is looking to hire seasonal field crew members to conduct vegetation monitoring for the California State Parks Wildfire and Forest Resilience Program. Crew members are part of a 4-person team that travels to participating State Parks on multi-day visits to establish monitoring plots and collect pre- and post-treatment data on vegetation and biomass/fuels to quantify the effects of forest treatments including prescribed fire, thinning and mastication.

Up to 1000 hours (5-6 months), starting May 15th to June 1st

The lab of Dr. Hugh Safford at UC Davis is looking to hire crew members for a seasonal field crew to collect data on vegetation, forest fuels and prescribed fire monitoring. The work will support CAL FIRE’s California Prescribed Fire Monitoring Program. The people hired will be part of a 4-person team that travels mostly to forested ecosystems across the state of California to establish monitoring plots and collect pre- and post-treatment data on vegetation and biomass/fuels to quantify the effects of forest treatments including prescribed fire, thinning and mastication. Work may include participation in and observation of prescribed fires, depending on weather, availability, and partner organization invitations.
