Safford Lab organize the session "Advances in forest restoration, management and adaptation in the Mediterranean climate zone of North America" at the 8th Mediterranean Forest Week
Various recent initiatives have been presented in applied science for the management of Mediterranean forests in California.
The 8th Mediterranean Forest Week (8MFW) took place from 11 to 15 November in Barcelona, Spain. The Mediterranean Forest Week (MFW) is a biennial event that serves as a platform for cooperation between researchers, policy makers and stakeholders, fostering dialogue on the challenges facing Mediterranean forests.
Organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the European Forest Institute Mediterranean Mechanism (EFIMED) and the Joint Organizing Committee, the MFW is one of the highlights of the Mediterranean forest calendar, offering the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and share solutions on the most crucial issues for Mediterranean forests.
In this context, the Safford Laboratory at UC Davis has been the organizer of the side event "Advances in forest restoration, management and adaptation in the Mediterranean climate zone of North America".
The North American Mediterranean Climate Zone (NAMCZ) includes most of California, southwestern Oregon, and extreme western Nevada in the United States, and the northern part of Baja California in Mexico.
The NAMCZ is the most similar of the world’s five MCZs to the Mediterranean Basin, based on strong biogeographic connections and similar biota, as well as important cultural connections linked to the original Spanish colonization and the more recent migration of people and ideas between Europe and the US West Coast.
However, collaborative efforts in applied science and fire and resource management are surprisingly underdeveloped between the two regions. We aim to present a menu of recent initiatives in applied science from the NAMCZ, in order to provide “food for thought” and a basis for preparing new collaborations between scientists and managers in the Mediterranean Basin and the NAMCZ.
Speakers in this session were:
- Sarah Bisbing, Associate Professor, University of Nevada-Reno
- Rut Domenech, Program Coordinator, California Prescribed Fire Monitoring Program
