New programming for the Forest and Fire Ecology Random Lectures (FFERAL) 2025
The first FFERAL conference of 2025 will be held on January 29 at UC-Davis with Dr. Don Hankins
Quick Summary
- The Forest and Fire Ecology Random Lecture Series (FFERAL) is an educational program sponsored by the California Fire Science Consortium and hosted by the Safford Laboratory at the University of California, Davis.
The Forest and Fire Ecology Random Lectures (FFERAL) series, a collaborative educational program sponsored by the California Fire Science Consortium and hosted by the Safford Lab at the University of California, Davis, kicks off its 2025 season with an engaging lineup of expert speakers. This series aims to share cutting-edge research and practices in forest and fire ecology with the public, exploring topics such as wildfire adaptation, fire impacts on biodiversity, and postfire restoration strategies.
The first FFERAL lecture of 2025 will take place on January 29 on the UC-Davis campus, in the Plant and Environmental Sciences (PES) Building, Room 3001, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM (PST). Dr. Don Hankins, an esteemed expert in ecocultural fire practices, will deliver a presentation titled "Ecocultural Stewardship of Oak Woodlands and Riparian Forests for Diverse Outcomes." The event will also be streamed online, courtesy of the California Fire Science Consortium. To attend virtually, registration is required through the link provided in the event flyer.
Future lectures in the 2025 FFERAL series include:
- February 19: Contextualizing contemporary and future fire regimes in western US forests. Sean Parks from Rocky Mountain Research Station, US Forest Service
- April 17: The search for general relationships between fire and biodiversity. Dr. Zack Steel from Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station
- April 24: Lessons from first-entry burns and reburns: from novel fire exclusion to fire-adapted landscapes. Dr. Susan Prichard from University of Washington School of Environmental and Forest Sciences
For those interested in a more personalized discussion, Dr. Don Hankins is available for one-on-one meetings during his visit. To schedule a meeting, please contact Hugh Safford.
The FFERAL lecture series is free and open to the public. Join us in exploring the dynamic field of forest and fire ecology and its critical role in sustainable landscape management.
