Dr. Hugh Safford Selected for Fulbright Specialist Program in Madagascar

During a recent visit to the U.S. Embassy in Antananarivo, Dr. Safford and Dr. Hasina Rakouth of the Missouri Botanical Garden Madagascar were welcomed by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Stephanie C. Arnold

We are proud to share that Dr. Hugh Safford, research faculty at the University of California, Davis, has been selected for the Fulbright Specialist Program in partnership with the Missouri Botanical Garden in Madagascar.

Dr. Safford will work closely with Malagasy colleagues to study the island’s rare serpentine ecosystems—unique geological formations that support plant species found nowhere else on Earth. His work will focus on advancing ecological research, mentoring emerging Malagasy plant ecologists, and deepening our understanding of how extreme geologies influence biodiversity patterns.

The Fulbright Specialist Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State, promotes international scientific collaboration by connecting U.S. experts with institutions around the world.

During a recent visit to the U.S. Embassy in Antananarivo, Dr. Safford and Dr. Hasina Rakouth of the Missouri Botanical Garden Madagascar were welcomed by Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Stephanie C. Arnold, who emphasized the importance of international cooperation in conservation science.

This project marks an exciting opportunity to strengthen U.S.–Madagascar partnerships in biodiversity research and capacity building.
